Hair loss

Alopecia, telogen effluvium, a receding hairline, less density. There are several causes and they aren't treated the same way. That's why we look at the scalp first.

What you notice

  • More hair on the pillow, in the shower or on the brush.
  • A thinner ponytail.
  • A hairline or crown that shows more.
  • Bald patches, round or irregular.
  • Itching, oil or flaking along with the shedding.

Why it happens

Hair falls out because of heredity (androgenetic alopecia), after an episode of stress, illness or childbirth (effluvium), because of scalp inflammation, anemia or thyroid problems, or because of an autoimmune process (alopecia areata).

Several causes can coexist. Treatment changes depending on which one it is, and sometimes a blood test is needed to know. Some, if left alone, don't come back.

When to see the dermatologist

  • If you've noticed more shedding than usual for over three months.
  • If you see bald patches.
  • If there's itching, scabs or pain on the scalp.
  • If you've already tried shampoos and nothing changes.

What we do at Cutem

  1. 1

Medical evaluation. We examine the scalp with a dermatoscope, the shedding pattern and your history. If needed, we order lab work (thyroid, iron, hormones).

  2. 2

Treatment. It may include lotions, oral medication, compounded formulas from the CUTEM or Capilarium lines, and procedures such as platelet-rich plasma. Prescription medications are prescribed and monitored at the clinic. Everything is filled at Cutem Pharmacy.

  3. 3

Maintenance. When the scalp needs ongoing care (oil, dandruff, sensitivity), Cutem Wellness offers head spa, scalp ozone and a scalp camera check.

What you've been told wrong

  • Myth

    It's normal, it's age.

    Reality

Hair loss has a cause. Age is one, not the only one.

  • Myth

    Biotin fixes it.

    Reality

Only if you're low on biotin, and that's rare.

  • Myth

If you cut it, it grows back stronger.

    Reality

A haircut doesn't touch the root. The root is what gets treated.

  • Myth

I'll start minoxidil or finasteride on my own.

    Reality

They're prescription medications. They need an evaluation and follow-up.

Frequently asked questions

  • Does treatment stop the shedding?

In many cases it slows down and some hair regains density. It depends on the cause and on starting early. The doctor tells you what to expect in your case.

  • Do I need blood tests?

Sometimes. They're ordered when your history or the examination suggests it.

  • How long until I notice?

Hair grows slowly. The usual check is at three or four months, with photos from the start.

  • Does the head spa help with hair loss?

It helps the scalp; it doesn't replace medical treatment. If the cause is inflammation or oil, it complements well.

This information is for guidance only and does not replace a medical consultation. Diagnosis and treatment are decided by the physician who examines you (the dermatologist or a family physician, as each profile states).
