Acne
Pimples, blackheads, cysts and the marks they leave. It isn't only for teenagers and it isn't caused by poor hygiene.
What you notice
- Blackheads and whiteheads on the nose, forehead, chin.
- Red pimples, sometimes with pus.
- Hard, painful bumps under the skin.
- Dark or red spots where a pimple used to be.
- Breakouts on the back, chest or shoulders.
Why it happens
The pore gets clogged with oil and cells, a bacterium grows inside and it becomes inflamed. Hormones, genetics, some cosmetics and certain medications trigger it.
Squeezing or scrubbing makes it worse and leaves marks. Adult acne, especially in women, is common and usually needs a different plan from a teenager's.
When to see the dermatologist
- If it leaves spots or scars.
- If there are painful cysts.
- If what you got at the corner drugstore didn't work in two months.
- If it affects how you feel. That counts too.

Over-washing irritates it and makes the breakout worse.
Myth
It goes away on its own with age.
Reality
Sometimes. The marks don't.
Myth
The sun dries it out.
Reality
It hides it for a few days and then leaves spots.
Myth
Alcohol or toothpaste dry it out.
Reality
They irritate, and irritated skin produces more oil and scars more.

Acne treatments take weeks to show change. The doctor tells you the expected timeline for your plan.

Yes, the right kind. We tell you which.
Do the spots it left go away?
Many improve with treatment and sun protection. Pitted scars need procedures. It's assessed at your consultation.

It's a serious medication that requires an evaluation, lab work and follow-up. Properly prescribed and monitored, it's one of the most effective treatments. Never buy it without a prescription.
